On January 7th and 8th, the MEC attended ALPA leadership training at ALPA headquarters in Virginia.
This training offered valuable insight into the roles and responsibilities of MEC officers, as well as an in-depth explanation of the vast resources available to ALPA members.
The following is a highlight of some of these resources.
Pilot Assistance Canada
As we navigate our integration with WestJet, we understand there are high emotions surrounding the changes to what we have been accustomed to in our life and working conditions at Sunwing, and the uncertainty of what lies ahead for our careers. We want you to know that there is help, if you need it.
One important positive element of joining ALPA is access to Pilot Assistance and their Pilot Peer Support (PPS) network.
PPS is a network of volunteer pilots who help fellow ALPA members deal with stress from any source: financial, family, relationship, and any other professional or personal challenges. PPS volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to listen and offer confidential, non-judgmental support to ALPA members. By pilots, for pilots.
Although we currently do not have Sunwing pilots in the PPS network, we are fortunate that the PPS network includes peers from ALPA airlines across Canada and the United States. You can contact the Canadian or national phone numbers below or fill out the online form here.

ALPA National PPS: 309-PPS-ALPA (309-777-2572)
Many more resources can be found on the Canadian Pilot Assistance website. Do not hesitate to reach out.
PPS Volunteer Call Out
We would like to begin to build our own network of PPS volunteers here at Sunwing. ALPA provides initial training for volunteers which allows a pilot to join the PPS network for a period of 2 years. Training would be conducted in February. If you would like to volunteer to receive the training and be available to support your fellow pilots, please contact Jeff.Binks@alpa.org no later than January 17, 2025.
Orange Card
ALPA’s “Orange Card” is your worldwide safety net. If you’re involved in an accident, serious incident, or a time-critical safety/security event, contact the worldwide ALPA accident/serious incident hotline listed on the card for assistance 24 hours per day. You’ll be connected to an ALPA professional staff member who will provide immediate help and get you in contact with an ALPA safety or security rep who will guide you through the situation and ensure that you and your crewmembers receive the necessary support.
There are numerous ways to connect to this Hotline. The phone numbers for the Hotline are 202-797-4180 and 703-892-4180 as a backup. You can also call 1-888-FLY-ALPA and follow the menu options. The Hotline can also be reached using the ALPA app which can directly connect you. If any roaming or long-distance charges occur while contacting these resources, ALPA will reimburse your costs. We will no longer utilize the Red Card number used previously with UNIFOR.
We have attached a PDF of the Orange Card to this email; however, you can also Access the Orange Card here or in the ALPA app (download now). An Orange Card will also be mailed to the home address you have provided to ALPA.
Basic Group Life Insurance
ALPA Canada provides basic life insurance of $20,000 in the event of a death of a covered Canadian resident who is a member of ALPA, regardless of location or cause of death. It is a universal plan for ALPA Canada pilots. Coverage is not available to pilots on a leave of absence. Pilots must complete a Designation of Beneficiary form in order to activate the insurance coverage.

ALPA Profile Mailing Address
There are still quite a few of our members that have not updated their contact information in their ALPA profile.
As a reminder, we need your contact information updated, especially your mailing address, so important information such as your ALPA welcome package, voting ballots and the Orange Card can be mailed to your home.
Please log in and review your member record.
