Fellow Flight Crew Members,
The Health & Safety Committee would like to provide an update from our last monthly meeting.
As we are getting back into our busy winter season, it is common for us and our colleagues to fall ill due to colds. When sick it is best to stay home and not bring an illness into the workplace. We discussed this at our last monthly Health and Safety meeting and the company reiterated that they do not want sick crew to come to work.
Also, with winter comes potentially dangerous ground transportation. Just a reminder that if you feel the roads or weather conditions are unsafe you have the right to say no. If you feel you are being pressured to accept potentially dangerous ground transportation, then you are within your rights to use your right to refuse dangerous work as outlined under part 2 of the Canada Labour Code.
Normally, all ground transportation should be planned not to occur during the middle of the night or in poor weather conditions. It is worth pointing out that if we are not wearing seatbelts and are involved in an accident, our life insurance and disability insurance will not cover us.
We also recognize that many pairings involve a ground deadhead of significant length and that some of our hotels at the destination are a considerable distance from the airport.
No matter where you are, no matter what vehicle, ALWAYS wear your seat belt.
In solidarity,
Your Health & Safety Committee
